1. Don’t go out to the shops this weekend

Seriously.

Don’t go to any Black Friday Sales this week or this weekend.

Avoid the stores.

If you physically don’t go into the stores, you won’t be tempted by the deals and fluff.

Find something else to do with yourself:

2. Log out of your Amazon and major retailer accounts. Ignore your email.

The major online retailers will be bombarding you this week, and into the weekend.

It will be offer, after offer, after offer.

For crap you don’t need.

Ignore everything you see and hear about Black Friday.

Unless…

3. Determine what you truly need

Often we buy things we think we need. Or because they catch our eye.

Do you really need X?

Ask these few questions before buying X:

How often am I going to use it?

Stuff is wasteful. We all have stuff. Our homes are often crammed with crap we don’t need, and often never use.

Ask yourself honestly: If I buy X, how often am I going to use X Is it going to sit in the cupboard and never get used, or is it going to be used every single day?

If it’s going to be used frequently, continue. If it’s going to sit in a cupboard and gather dust, don’t buy!

Will I still want it tomorrow?

Take the emotion out of it. Give yourself a bit of headspace.

Don’t buy today.

Wait until tomorrow. Ask yourself tomorrow:

If you didn’t struggle, forget it. Leave it. Delay buying!

Will I still want it in a month?

This won’t work for Black Friday deals, but it works in the general. Postpone the purchase for 30 days, and ask the same question: Wait until tomorrow. Ask yourself tomorrow:

If you didn’t miss X for 30 days, you’ll likely never miss it.

Can I get it another way?

This is huge: Can you borrow X, use it, then give it back?

Tools are the obvious application of this question. Why spend hundreds on a ladder, when you could borrow one from friends and family.

This lets you scratch the itch, or kill the pain, but without the spend!

Can I get a better deal elsewhere?

Don’t be attracted by what looks like the BEST DEAL, BUY NOW!!

Take another step back.

If you have decided X is a true need, spend 5 minutes looking to see if there is a better deal elsewhere. It’ll be worth it.

Don’t forget to use cashback sites like TopCashback* to save a little more!

Can I afford it?

Buying X if you can’t afford it is likely to hurt your wealth. Bad buying decisions can set you back years if not decades.

  1. Do you have money in the bank to buy outright? If not: Stop. Think.
  2. Can you only buy with Credit?. Stop. Think.
  3. Is the Credit on offer above 0%?. Stop. Think.
  4. What could I do with the money instead of buying X?

Stop. Think. If you can buy it outright, and you’ve determined it’s a need. Go ahead.

If you can’t buy outright, and Credit is greater than 0%, you need to Stop & Think. Is the need an emergency? Use your emergency fund. If you have no emergency fund, can you fill the need some other way? Learn to treat debt with the healthy scepticism it deserves.

Now sometimes you truly need something.

Maybe your fridge has broken down. It’s beyond economical repair. In this case, utilize the Black Friday deals and get last year’s model! It’s an actual need!
